More than Friends

My curiosity grew as I got out of the car and followed Todd. I was surprised to see a padlock on the door. I heard keys jingling as Todd got out a ring crammed with keys. He fiddled with the lock before finding the right key and opening the door. He walked in and flicked the light switch.

Suddenly the space was filled in a soft glowing light. It revealed a large beanbag chair in the corner with a rug worn soft in front of it. There was a small, white shelf beside it with a selection of books. Opposite the beanbag was a loveseat that had clearly seen better days. It sagged and the fabric was thin in places. But it was clean and looked surprisingly comfortable. There was also a small wooden table against the wall. On it I could see Styrofoam cups, a kettle and two unmarked containers. Knowing Todd’s habits, I assumed the containers held tea bags and sugar.

Despite the worn furniture there was something warm and cozy about the place. I walked in further, heading towards the bookshelf. I ran my fingers over the line of books. The titles were a mix of fiction and non-fiction. I pulled out a book that looked familiar and analyzed it front and back. It was A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, one of my favourites. I looked up to find Todd watching my every move, my every reaction.

“Have you read Hosseini’s other book, The Kite Runner?” I asked.

Todd shook his head. “No, not yet. I’m currently reading The Book of Negroes. Have you heard of it?”

“Yeah, I have, it’s the one by Lawrence Hill. I read it, and watched the TV version too. The book is better.”

I put the Hosseini book back on the shelf and picked out another one. The Girl on the Train. I turned it over to read the back cover and the description caught my curiosity. I took the book with me as I plopped myself on the loveseat. I was right, it is comfortable, I thought as I skimmed through the pages of the book.

“This looks good,” I said, holding it up.

“I haven’t read it yet. My aunt gave it to me last Christmas,” Todd said as he took a seat next to me.

I placed the book on my lap and gave the room another look over. “So are we trespassing?”

He chuckled, “Not at all. This whole place is my uncle’s. He has no use for it because he’s a truck driver and is on the road a lot. So he lets me use it whenever I want to just be.”

“Why doesn’t he just sell it if he has no use for it?”

“I dunno. Maybe he has plans for it in the future.” Todd shrugged. “But I’m not going to question him about it and give him ideas. Otherwise I might have to give this up.”

“How often do you come here?” I asked curiously.

“Whenever the worries at home get too much. We live in a small, cramped house and there is not a lot of privacy.
